Real R & R Retreat

Fatuma’s Tower, Lamu, Kenya

12-18th February 2018

Are you a humanitarian, human rights, international legal or development professional working in a challenging environment? Are you in need of some REAL Rest and Recuperation? Would you like to restore your physical and mental balance, rest, rejuvenate and take stock of where you are now and where you aspire to be? How would you like to retreat to a beautiful island with like minded people and dive deep into yoga, meditation and relaxation? If this sounds like just what the doctor ordered then this Real R & R Retreat is for you!

We will retreat to the Indian Ocean and base ourselves in the sleepy fishing village of Shella, Lamu Island, Kenya. Lamu island is an area of stunning natural beauty with warm ocean waters and pristine beaches of golden sand. Lamu is a UNESCO heritage site and it offers the perfect place to relax, kick back, revive and find peace.

Our home for the week is the elegant and peaceful Fatuma’s Tower http://www.fatumastower.com/. This beautifully restored historic house has a wonderfully calming Swahili atmosphere. Each room in the house is unique and there are a number of beautiful chill out areas, gardens, a plunge pool and a dedicated yoga studio. During your stay you’ll enjoy an abundance of sweet tropical fruits, farm-fresh produce and home-cooked seafood and vegetarian dishes served in the spacious antique gardens. Our chefs take great care to source everything locally and seafood straight from the ocean is a speciality.

The retreat is led by Liz Griffin. Over the past 20 years Liz has combined her passion for yoga on the mat with international public service off the mat (karma yoga). Liz commenced her career working for humanitarian NGOs during the war in Bosnia in 1993. She then moved into the human rights and international legal field and worked for NGOs, the UN and academic institutions around the world. She has a specialisation in human rights and protection in peacekeeping, conflict and post-conflict environments. Liz has lived and worked in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Croatia, India, Kosovo, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, South Africa and Uganda. Liz is a Fellow, Human Rights Centre, University of Essex, UK and Extraordinary Professor, Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Liz also consults for academic institutions, NGOs and the UN. For more information meet Liz: https://www.griffinyoga.co.uk/meet-liz/

Liz became serious about yoga after a harrowing mission to Afghanistan in 2003 where she was investigating gender based violence for a human rights NGO. She trained as a yoga teacher in 2006 and became a senior yoga teacher (the highest “rank” a yoga teacher can attain) in 2014. Liz is passionate about about improving self care by promoting the multiple benefits of yoga, meditation and mindfulness, and research into the effects of working on the real and “digital frontline”. She advocates to change management practices: http://eyewitnessmediahub.com/research/vicarious-trauma
